Friday 25th – Sunday 27th August

While the festival is located on Fish meadow around a quarter of a mile from The Boathouse there will still be plenty happening in and around our restaurant. We will be opening at the earlier time of 9am for festival breakfast priced at £5 with a full English or vegetarian breakfast available. We also have breakfast croissants and a range of pastries available. Lunch will be served as usual from 12pm with our balcony and river terrace open with stunning views over the River Severn from 12pm – 3pm you can enjoy any 5 tapas dishes for just £20. Enjoy one of our 30 Gins or special in house cocktails during the afternoon or early evening for our Happy hour where cocktails are priced at 2 for £7.50!

The Boathouse will also be open on Bank Holiday Monday from 10am – 5pm serving food during these hours.

Upton Blues festival at The Boathouse Mon, 03 Jul 2017 21:40:55 +0000 The Upton Blues festival is one of the largest free Blues festivals in the country and winner of the UK’s Blues festival of the year 2015 and 2016. This years festival will take place from 21st – 23rd July and of course here at The Boathouse we will be doing our bit to support the festival by hosting some fantastic bands throughout, here is our lineup for this years festival –

Your guide to eating tapas at the Boathouse

Thinking of visiting The Boathouse this summer? Tapas can be a little confusing and intimidating if you have not experienced eating tapas style before. Here are the answers to a few frequently asked questions and a few Myths but to bed ….


What is tapas?

Tapas are a selection of hot or cold dishes these dishes are a starter size and often ordered by couples or small groups of people to share, enjoy a variety of flavours based upon your personal food preferences or try something new without the expense of a fully priced main course. Our front of house team are fully trained in explaining our concept to guests and are always on hand and available should you have any queries.

Our menu here at the Boathouse is influenced largely by Mediterranean Cuisine, we have many Italian and Greek influenced dishes as well as staple Spanish dishes and chefs specials which add a British twist to the term ‘tapas’

The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused on eating an entire meal set out before them. We encourage a relaxed way of dining, and we hope you enjoy your experience with us at the Boathouse.


But I’m hungry and tapas dishes are small….

The beauty of tapas is that it satisfies all appetites, if you’re looking for a snack, looking to celebrate with family, want a romantic meal or your simply very hungry tapas will suit all your needs.

We suggest choosing five dishes between two diners this provides adequate food for a meal out at lunch or evening and typically would cost around £25 for the two of you. Another advantage of tapas is that you can place an order, enjoy your food and then add to it if necessary. For those with the lighter appetite we suggest two dishes per person is enough.

For the larger appetite we offer our famous ‘kings tapas’  this is a selection of 11 dishes all of a taster size which include a mixture of our chefs daily specials and most popular items from our regular tapas menu. Once you have been served your 11th dish you will have the opportunity to have a reserve of any dishes you have particularly enjoyed making this option an ‘all you can eat’ offer for just £20 pp


But I don’t like spicy food….

From our 30 dish tapas menu only 2 dishes can be classed as spicy and have chilli amongst its ingredients. These dishes are pan fried chorizo with chilli and red peppers and marinated chicken skewers.


One of our group is a fussy eater …..

We believe there is no such thing! All of our dishes are made to order and so any listed menu item can be adapted to suit all pallets with any ingredients not to your liking replaced or removed. Our menu is designed to suit all ages, food tastes and preferences we have 8 vegetarian dishes, 6 fish, 6 meat dishes, vegan friendly dishes, food for those with conservative tastes and those with the more adventurous tastes.

Do you cater for Celiacs?

Celiac? no problem! 80% of our menu is gluten free, we do not use flour in any of our sauces and with prior notice any fried foods can be made with corn flour. We also always stock gluten free bread.

Are children welcome?

The Boathouse is a family restaurant and children are welcome during the day time and at evenings, they also love tapas by the way! We do however ask that children under 11 leave the restaurant by 9pm unless they are attending a private party.

What drinks are available at The Boathouse?

We are proud of our bar service and in fact boast the largest range of drinks in the town, we serve a range of cocktails which include some old school classics as well as some of our bar staffs creations ! We also have a range of 18 different flavoured and craft Gins, our whisky corner has 8 single malt whiskies and Bourbons. We also serve a selection of 5 rums and have 22 other spirits on offer.

Our wine list consists of New world, European and British wines with 12 Champagnes and sparkling wines to choose from. Not to mention 5 draft beer and cider products and a never ending choice of bottled beers and craft Ales.

The Boathouse is proud to announce a partnership with Casanova Prosecco, we are currently the only venue outside of London to sell this beautiful range of flavoured and vintage prosecco, it’s a must try!

Our most popular dishes…

We regularly ask our diners what their favourite dishes from our tapas menu are, the items that often spring up are calamari, flambe chicken with sweet peppers and vodka, king prawns with chorizo and truffle oil, pork and fennel terrine with a parmesan sauce and of course our deep fried haloumi!

Of our recent spring time specials the poached trout with caramel and braised beef in balsamic sauce have been particularly popular.

Special dishes this spring Tue, 25 Apr 2017 12:44:22 +0000 Spring has sprung and here at The Boathouse we have some delicious specials available in April and May. Our ‘kings tapas’ menu features some of our chefs new creations which have been very well received so far this spring –

  • Fan fried Seabass in prosecco with pomegranates on a bed of black rice and quinoa
  • Pork, fennel and mustard seed terrine with a creamy parmesan sauce (pictured)

Due to its growing popularity and upon the request of some of our customers we are delighted to introduce our new ‘Boathouse Gin Club’

What is the Gin Club?

Members of our Gin club will receive monthly updates on our craft Gin specials along with invitations to our tasting evenings to be held every 6 weeks. These evening will allow members to taste up to 6 different craft Gins along with some chefs special canapes for £15 per person, at the end of the evening members will have the chance to purchase bottles of their favourite Gin to take home at trade prices.

Our first tasting evening will be taking place of Thursday 2nd February starting at 7.30pm

Members will also be issued with a discount card entitling them to 15% off all Gin drinks and Gin based cocktails from our bar at any time.

Here’s a few fun facts about Gin..

London’s most popular drink in the winter of 1823 was the Hot Gin Twist

British drinkers have been quaffing gin in record amounts during 2016, buying 40m bottles in a spending spree that outstripped sales growth in beer and sparkling wine.

Gin was born around 1689. The earliest known food pairing occurred in 1731: gingerbread. This became quite common and is still traditional in parts of England.

Nearly all juniper used in gin is picked wild. Almost none is cultivated.

Annual gin sales rose 16% to smash through the £1bn barrier for the first time in the UK, leading the drink industry to declare 2016 the “year of gin”.

The juniper berry is actually not a berry at all. It is a female seed cone, a highly evolved pinecone with fleshy and merged scales that give it the appearance of a berry.

At Yalta, President Roosevelt complained that there were no lemons to make twists for his gin martini. Stalin had a lemon tree flown from Georgia that day.

A growing thirst for the spirit has also caused a surge in the number of distilleries, with about 40 opening in 2016.

Tapas by the River – our food blogger review Thu, 10 Nov 2016 14:58:56 +0000 Here at the Boathouse we always appreciate customer feedback, tripadvisor is the obvious review site that springs to mind but we are also lucky enough to be visited and reviewed by food bloggers from time to time. We had a visit from @eatwithellen over the summer months, here’s what she had to say – If you haven’t been to Upton-upon-Severn, it’s definitely worth a visit. A lovely riverside town that’s home to several annual festivals, the most famous being its Blues Festival. If you can’t make it to the seaside, it’s a great alternative and a fab place to spend a day. Boats cruising up and down, riverside walks, lovely little antique and independent shops (including a great wine merchant), and several pubs and restaurants along the banks of the river. These include The BoatHouse – a bit of a break from the norm of riverside pubs that seem to make up a lot of the eateries in Upton. It’s a cafe, tapas restaurant, and wine bar. Sounds different right? It certainly looks a bit different and its appearance definitely didn’t smack of Spanish tapas. The cafe is downstairs in the perfect spot to grab any passing trade keen for a coffee, ice-cream, sandwich etc. And upstairs is the restaurant along with a large terrace with beautiful views over the river – the perfect place to wile away a few hours and pretend you’re on holiday (providing the good old English weather complies!). Of course, we all know rural Worcestershire isn’t quite one of the Spanish Costas, so Mr M and I were intrigued as to how good tapas could be in a quintessentially English setting. Very good, it turns out, hence the fact The Boathouse managed to knock our socks off. It’s an extensive tapas menu and not strictly Spanish I don’t think. More an appealing mixture of Mediterranean dishes from homemade dips and pitta to meatballs, fish dishes, veggie options, and some huge grazing boards. They also do an option called the ‘Kings Tapas’ where, for £20 a head, the chef basically picks you 11 dishes that might be from the menu, plus whatever specials he happens to have on that day. Not just that, if there are any you absolutely love you can just ask for more – for free! Now, I know this might sound like a bit of an ‘all you can eat’ gimmick that might put you off, but trust me, it’s the way to go. The perfect way to try lots of dishes, including those you might not ordinarily pick, and it also means you can enjoy them coming out as and when they’re ready, in a steady flow of food just like it would be if you’re abroad. Perfecto. Our foodie fun in someone else’s hands, we sat back and let the party begin. First up was homemade humous and tzatziki served with warm pitta bread. Ironically, I’m writing this sat in Kefalonia where the tzatziki and pitta are plentiful and oh-so-good. But I can safely say The Boathouse’s offering can easily hold its own against any I’ve had in Greece. Forget bland supermarket-style yoghurt with a bit of cucumber suspended in it. This was deliciously flavoured and delicately seasoned to allow the yoghurty cucumber-y ness to sing. Decent seasoning proved to be an ongoing theme throughout our meal at The Boathouse. You see it all the time on things like Masterchef, don’t you? Chefs banging on about seasoning and taste, and it makes you realise that inadequately seasoning a meal can make or break it. Not so here – even the simplest of dishes were made delicious by a careful use of seasoning and spice, and filled you with faith that you’re in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing with food. Next up was deep-fried halloumi, something I always enjoy though rarely order as I’m always on a quest for new and exciting things. As I look on this dish with the benefit of hindsight, with such an indulgent party of flavours on their way it was nice to have something so simple as one of the dishes. Third on the list were these pan-fried garlic mushrooms in champagne. Sounds simple, looks simple, right? Yes, but do not underestimate how good this can be. The texture was just right, still a bit meaty without a hint of slime and again, beautifully seasoned in their buttery sauce. Never before have I so underestimated a dish as I did these mushrooms. Alongside them came calamari – one of Mr M’s firm favourites and something we’ve ordered more times than I can possibly say. Jamie considers himself a bit of an expert on decent calamari and was prepared to be unimpressed. Not so here. Wide-eyes, he declared The Boathouse’s to be some of the best he’s ever tasted. Light, delicate batter, with meaty yet not rubbery squid inside. Again, brilliantly seasoned and a delight to eat. Four dishes in, we were wondering if our meal had peaked early. Perhaps it was fluke they’d managed to hit the spot with the early deliveries? Surely they couldn’t keep it up for seven more dishes? Oh how I love to be proved wrong. The next plate raised the bar yet again. Artistically-presented, it held two dishes – one from the menu and one a creation purely for that day. Pan-fried king prawns cooked in truffle oil and perched on chorizo were rich and reminded me a bit of the pintxos mum and I enjoyed in Bilbao. But it was the special – salmon cooked in caramel on a bed of lime-infused courgette spaghetti that stole the show for me. The generous portion of salmon was sweet and sticky on the outside and flaked apart beautifully, its richness perfectly counter-balanced by the citrus freshness of the courgetti. I’ve never had these flavours together and they’re not anything an amateur like me could ever dream up, but they just worked. If that had been the end of the meal, I can safely say I’d have been happy. But there was more, far more to come. Chicken flambeed in vodka with a creamy sauce and sweet peppers was another different one, and I loved the spicy creamy sauce, though Jamie wasn’t quite so enamoured by it as some of the other dishes. And homemade meatballs – something you see on pretty much every tapas menu anywhere, ever – were another perfectly-executed classic. The meatballs were, again, perfectly seasoned to allow their own taste to shine through, while the sweet tomato sauce provided the perfect co-star. Two courses to go. And we were pretty excited. Even more so when the beef and pomegranate tagine with pink peppercorns was put down in front of us. Simple in appearance but complex in taste, it stole the show for Jamie as he declared it his favourite of the day. The beef was tender and set in a sauce with a slight warmth punctuated by starbursts of heat from the pink peppercorns. The pomegranate seeds, in contrast, added little pops of sweetness that brought that stereotypical fruity flavour to the tagine. And finally. Patatas bravas. Something I never want to order because it’s so often a few lumps of underdone potatoes with a nondescript tomato sauce on top. Not so here. Crispy little cubes of potato, crunchy on the outside and soft inside, salted and spices with paprika, and served in a sweet, deep sauce. Not a hint of greasiness and probably a dish that has changed my view of patatas bravas forever. It was one of those meals where we sat for a few minutes in stunned silence afterwards, trying to compute how this low-key spot in a little Worcestershire town could have just served up such a feast. Are you wondering whether they were expecting me and so pulled something amazing out of the bag? Yeah, I did too. Sounds crazy in hindsight – I mean, if a chef’s crap they’re not exactly going to be able to suddenly come up with the goods for one occasion. And having met Kyle, the chef, after a meal, I can safely say he seems like the kind of guy who would rather go out of business than lower his standards. Even so, I did my due diligence and checked, and it seems it’s not just me whose been impressed. “Exceptionally good”, “fantastic”, “delicious” – all descriptions from different people – and I’ve got to agree with them. On top of this, the setting’s great and the staff are helpful – both things you know I value in a place. As we sat digesting our little banquet, both physically and mentally, we both started planning our return when we could show off our little find to friends with the same love of food as us. The term ‘hidden gem’ is one of those overused phrases – including in this blog I imagine. But The Boathouse really does fit that description. I’m just glad I’ve been lucky enough to try it. And not just once, because we’re definitely going back!

The Boathouses focuses on breaking the mould of the traditional tapas bar in Spain where so often dishes are thrown together using a mixture of cured ham and cold cheeses. Our aim at the Boathouse is to bring our own slant and style of cooking to the world of Tapas. Head chef Kyle Hassall has put together a menu inspired by dishes from Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco with particular attention paid to the authenticity of each dish. In addition to the more well-known Mediterranean cuisine on offer Kyle has incorporated some of his own creations to add a more modern twist to the menu, such dishes include –

  • Oven baked filet of salmon with a caramel glaze served on a bed of courgette spaghetti
  • Beef and pomegranate tagine with pearl cous cous
  • Poached cod with saffron cream and green pepper salsa
  • Deep fried feta goujons coated in sesame seeds with an orange and pumpkin dip
  • Mini pistachio, Goats cheese and cranberry wellington

The Boathouse is also the first of its kind to be able to offer its regular tapas menu to those diners on a gluten free diet without the need to adapt any of its recipes. ‘Tapas is all about sharing and so it was decided when we created the menu to use natural stocks and prepare dishes without using flour so that we were able to cater for coeliac guests and they could share dishes with friends in peace of mind, after all tapas is about sharing!’ Kyle, chef.

The Boathouse is fast becoming a popular venue for large groups and private parties including weddings with the Bride and Groom deciding to stray away from traditional fayre and instead treat their guests to an array of tapas in the form of the now famous ‘kings tapas’

The kings tapas is another of The Boathouses unique offerings, very much following the format of a traditional ‘mezze’ style meal the Kings tapas provides guests with the opportunity to try 11 different and varied tapas dishes which includes the most popular items from the menu alongside weekly specials this offering changes on a daily basis and is a great way for those new to tapas to be introduced. But wait it gets better!  Upon the completion of your kings tapas if you would like a repeat of any dish/dishes there is no extra charge making the kings tapas an all you can eat offer! It’s a treat and a challenge!

Visiting a restaurant is no longer about simply eating and drinking. Customers should be given an experience, be pampered and entertained here at The Boathouse we aim to do just that.

Homemade smoked salmon fish cakes with beetroot tartare sauce

Carpaccio of Beef topped with rocket and parmesan with olive oil and lemon

Leek and Potato soup served with a drizzle of cream and crusty bread


Main Courses

Beef stroganoff – made with fillet of beef, onions, mushroom, mustard, tarragon and cream

Lamb shank – Slow roasted with a red wine and rosemary gravy

Seabass – Pan fried fillets of seabass in champagne, garlic and lemon sauce

Vegetarian Wellington – Homemade pastry Wellington with Brie, cranberry ,spinach and hazelnuts

(All main courses are served with seasonal vegetables and potato Gratin)
